Big Cat Series

Two paintings from Big Cat Series.  The first one is done and called "Seymour, That's Where I am From."  and The second one is "Planter Max" but is not done.  I am at good old Joe van Gogh's wasting some time.  It can be better wasting time out of the house as opposed to in the house.  I could or should be making some stretcher bars, larger format ones like the ones I am currently working on 5'x5'.  Where this Big Cat series will get exhibited is anybody's guess.  The next one to be done will have as its subject my third cat, O.C..  I'd like to do 6 in all but only have three cats so I'll be forced to recycle subjects.

new painting

Latest Painting, titled See More.
It marks a return to the image, the representational image.  It is 5'x5'.
Have been watching a lot of  you tube lately and wearing fingerless gloves (winter studio necessity)

I have donated 4 small paintings on paper to a Lodi Project Haiti Relief exhibition.  More info here:http://www.thelodiproject.com/home.html All pieces are being sold for $25 a pop.

Good deal , good cause I think.

Inspired by Rice Chapel

While in Houston I had the opportunity to visit the Rice University Chapel. It was quite beautiful.  The back wall and columns are covered in small gold mosaic.  There isn't any recognizable iconography which I quite liked.

It was night when I visited and not all the lights were on in the chapel but I could still get an impression of the walls humble beauty.

Now back in my studio in Durham I have been processing my Rice Chapel impressions.

Been Away, Now I am Back

Been busy.  Actually forgot I started this blog.  Some how remembered and it is time to recap what has been going on.

I am saving my pennies to get a CAA membership,  That's College Art Association membership so I can keep abreast of the goings on in the world of art education.

I finished the Houston Marathon with my brother and sister.  I was surprised by Houston.  Besides the marathon the Menil Art Campus was a high light of the trip.  A whole building of Cy Twombly in natural light, the Rothko Chapel, some early small Brice Marden color field paintings.  Hot stuff.  I would have pictures of this reverential experience but they were not allowed.

Back in Durham now.  Painting like I have a new fire under my butt.  I am going to apply for some residencies.
